DRW X Dame Kelly Holmes Trust

Dallaglio RugbyWorks and Dame Kelly Holmes Trust are both sport for development organisations that share many common values and aims. We work with disadvantaged young people and assist them to overcome barriers they may face in their life. We use the power of sport and the life skills that come from partaking in physical activity for good. Both organisations have been working collaboratively in London for two academic years with Trust athlete mentors delivering weekly sport sessions alongside DRW coaches in a total of 5 schools across London.

By working together, the young people we work with have the opportunity to challenge themselves in a variety of sports including rugby, boxing and fencing. Our Dallaglio RugbyWorks coaches work alongside Hannah Beharry, 9 time British Boxing Champion and Claire Bennet, former professional fencer and other Trust athlete mentors. Trust athlete mentors support RugbyWorks in delivering the Sports Leaders Qualification as well, tailoring their intervention around the young people’s needs and abilities. Their support has been crucial for RugbyWorks and essential for the young people’s development.

I’ve been working with Hannah and Claire for more than a year and I’ve seen first-hand how valuable their inputs have been during the sessions. The young people look at them as a role models and they truly enjoy the activities we deliver together. Working alongside Dame Kelly Holmes Trust athletes has been a privilege, we share a common goal and desire, which is supporting the young people in reaching their potential through sport

During the Easter holidays, Dallaglio RugbyWorks coaches and Dame Kelly Holmes Trust athletes will work together to deliver multi sports camps at Streatham & Croydon RFC over 4 days.

Dallaglio RugbyWorks passions and values are very similar to my own. I am passionate about supporting young people to achieve their potential through the power of sport. The DRW coaches are fantastic at engaging the group in rugby and other fun sporting activities. They bring the team together, encourage a sense of togetherness, and bring out the best in each individual. It is a wonderful feeling to be supporting our group of young people and use the mentoring skills that I have acquired at the Trust to make a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of our group alongside Dallaglio RugbyWorks.

Dallaglio RugbyWorks coaches will be delivering a Level 1 qualification in Sports Leadership. The young people undertaking a qualification in Sports Leadership will learn and demonstrate important life skills such as effective communication and organisation whilst learning to lead basic physical activities and sport sessions.

The Trust athlete mentors will run a food education workshop, talking to the young people about their lifestyle and how an athlete manages their diet. They will be talking about healthy eating on a budget and including team building exercises and quizzes to bring the session to life!

The Easter camp is about creating new opportunities for the young people we work with. It gives our young people the chance to try new sports such as fencing that without the DKHT athletes they may not have access to. Also by working with the DKHT mentors we are able to show our young people what the life of a professional athlete looks like.
