Our intern Laurence makes a session visit to Francis Barber, Tooting, read further to see how he got on.

Just before the Easter break, I visited Francis Barber Tooting alongside coaches Mike and Tom. The session had a slightly different dynamic to usual; in this session, Mike held ten minute 1-to-1 sessions with the young people to discuss with them their aspirations for the future and teach them valuable interview techniques to help with their job prospects.

The practical session had an excellent turn out, with all the enrolled RugbyWorks young people attending. Coach Tom led the practical session with myself assisting him. The session began with a basic game of Bulldog, I felt this game in particular engaged the young people as it combines both communication skills and brings out a competitive element. By the end of the session, we were able to have a structured game of touch rugby.

All the young people got thoroughly stuck in and were able to show off some of their skills. I was really impressed as to how competent they were and fully understood the rules of touch, enabling us to have a flowing game with few stoppages. This is only possible with the coaches support combined with the hard work of the young people.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Tooting, the young people on the programme all show huge potential, and are all extremely willing and engaged in the programme. Thanks again to the coaches for having me, I’ll be back!
