Dallaglio RugbyWorks is an intensive, long-term skills development programme based on rugby, through which we aim to get teenagers outside of mainstream education into sustained education, employment or training.

This week we have been lucky enough to have the fantastic State of Mind join us in our sessions and deliver to our groups of young people. State of Mind aim to promote positive mental health among sportsmen and women, fans and wider communities, and ultimately to prevent suicide.

They also aim to raise awareness of the issues surrounding mental health and well being and deliver education on the subject to all levels of sport, business, education and community groups.

Today we were privileged to have former professional Rugby League player and coach, Phil Veivers, deliver an insightful and profound session to our two cohorts of young people at Woolton High School in Liverpool. Phil provided both groups with fantastic information about mental health, how we can maintain and improve our mental health. He also expressed the importance of talking about any problems, no matter how big our small that you may be facing, as a method of coping and getting help with any issues.

Phil then shared a very moving and poignant look back on his own struggles with mental illness after a difficult time in his personal life and after finding himself out of coaching. One of the group, AJ, reflected on the session saying “people think that admitting your weaknesses is weak but it’s actually a strength” which was fantastic to hear.
