Dallaglio RugbyWorks is an intensive, long-term skills development programme based on rugby, through which we aim to get teenagers outside of mainstream education into sustained education, employment or training.

This week on the North West Dallaglio RugbyWorks programme we have been lucky enough to have the fantastic State of Mind join us in our sessions and deliver to our groups of young people.

State of Mind aim to promote positive mental health among sportsmen and women, fans and wider communities, and ultimately to prevent suicide, they aim to raise awareness of the issues surrounding mental health and wellbeing and deliver education on the subject to all levels of sport, business, education and community groups.

Today we were privileged to have former professional Rugby League star and England international, Danny Sculthorpe, deliver an insightful and profound session to our cohort of young people at Bolton St Catherine’s Academy. Danny provided the group with fantastic information about mental health and how they could help themselves and others improve their mental health such as; eating right, doing more physical activity and focusing on what you enjoy and what you’re good at. He also expressed the importance of talking about any problems no matter how big our small that you may be facing.

Danny then shared a very moving and poignant look back on his own struggles with mental illness after a career ending injury. One of the group, Josh, noted “it was sad (hearing about Danny’s struggles after his injury) and I’ll focus on the things I’m good at and try harder at them.”
