Dallaglio RugbyWorks is an intensive, long-term skills development programme based on rugby, through which we aim to get teenagers outside of mainstream education into sustained education, employment or training.

On October 4th, Lawrence and the RugbyWorks team hosted our 8th annual golf tournament. In contrast to previous years, the 2018 edition was hosted much closer to home than previous iterations in Scotland and Portugal, this time at the majestic Sunningdale Golf Club in Surrey.

After battling through hurricane conditions last year in North Berwick, returning golfers arrived to find this undoubted jewel of the British golfing crown windless and ready for the taking. After a light breakfast and welcome from RugbyWorks founder Lawrence, 18 four balls made for tee boxes across the revered Old Course for a shotgun start. Among the competition this year were two Legends teams. In the first, Lawrence was joined by former British and Irish Lions players, Jeremy Guscott and Rob Henderson, alongside TV and Radio Broadcaster Georgie Bingham. The second Legends team took to the fairways comprised of Scottish rugby duo Thom and Max Evans and former Wales international Tom Shanklin.

As players made their way round the course they tried their luck on the 4th hole where our nearest the pin competition was based. RugbyWorks staff greeted them at the halfway hut amid the welcome scent of Sunningdale’s infamous sausage sandwiches and the perhaps less welcome sight of a shot of Kummel. Another opportunity for individual glory presented itself on the 18th hole, where this time the players put their power rather than accuracy to the test in our longest drive contest. All returned to the clubhouse, rivalries aside, unanimous in their appreciation for the wonderful course.

Thoughts then turned to lunch and fundraising for our RugbyWorks young people, now spread throughout over 70 Alternative Provision schools across the country. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal before an address from CEO Rachel Roxburgh ushered in the suitably imposing figure of Martin Bayfield to host an auction of magnificent lots in aid of RugbyWorks. As ever, we must give our sincerest thanks to all of who took part for their incredible generosity.

We are delighted to report that over £60,000 was raised in support of our young people, with £22,000 coming through our sponsor a child pledge; an especially humbling thing for the RugbyWorks team in attendance.

With the auction concluded, Lawrence delivered the eagerly anticipated results, which this year were available in real time to players on the course thanks to the excellent technology of VPAR. The winners were:

Nearest the Pin: John Deane

Longest Drive: Laurence Johnson

Overall Individual Score: Sebastian Espouy

Winning Team (104 points): Mike Dunderdale, Stuart Hennell, Anthony Tarchetti & Paul Smith.

A Q&A with our legends team members rounded off proceedings. Supporters mined their expertise on a number of issues with the World Cup just a year away and their memory banks for some lighter hearted off-pitch tales!

With new names etched on the coveted RugbyWorks golf trophy, we must as always give an enormous thanks to our hosts, Sunningdale Golf Club, whose staff were instrumental in such an enjoyable and successful day.   Also Flo Rossigneaux at Eden Park for ensuring our golfers looked the part!
