Dallaglio RugbyWorks is an intensive, long-term skills development programme based on rugby, through which we aim to get teenagers outside of mainstream education into sustained education, employment or training.

Over the weekend of the 14th of October, Dallaglio RugbyWorks welcomed supporters to the sublime grounds of Archerfield Estate and Links for our annual golf event.

In contrast to the Mediterranean sunshine of the previous year, North Berwick showed its wild side with a blustery hand from storm Ophelia.Guests welcomed a glass of champagne and the peaceful solace of the Archerfield clubhouse upon arrival on Sunday. This was a brief respite though, as teams headed out into the shifting conditions for a practice round on the Fidra Links. The difficult conditions did little to dampen the lively and convivial atmosphere on the course though, as the majority of groups completed a full 18 holes.

On Sunday evening, guests were hosted in the wonderful Mansion House for dinner ahead of Monday’s tournament. The imminent arrival of Ophelia’s full wrath and the growing competitive spirit in the room saw to it that mulligan vouchers sold quickly. Guests also put their rugby wisdom to the test as they tried to match Lawrence’s predicted England XV in our autumn international challenge. Proceeds from both went to support the RugbyWorks programme.

On Monday morning, our intrepid golfers took to the Dirleton Links course in wet and windy conditions. They were joined by Lawrence and his celebrity team, this year comprised of past England and Lions teammates, Jeremy Guscott and Jason Leonard OBE, together with Rob Henderson, former Ireland and Lions centre.

Staff collected the soggy scorecards from our golfers as they returned to the clubhouse in high spirits. Later that evening, they returned to the Mansion House for a dinner and auction in support of RugbyWorks. A bag piper welcomed the guests in true Scottish fashion, adding to an already special atmosphere. CEO, Rachel Roxburgh, announced the results of the competition and winners received their prizes from Lawrence before dinner. I am pleased to report the results as follows:

Overall Team Winner: Bill Carey-Evans, Jonathan Luff, Andrew Williams, Julian Miall

Longest Drive: Leigh Hales

Nearest to the Pin: Julian Miall

Huge congratulations are due to not only the winners, but also every participant who battled on in the inclement weather and made for a fantastic day.

Competition was set aside quickly though as diners united in support of the RugbyWorks programme. The auction followed dinner and was blessed by a fine array of prizes as well as the riveting Jonny Gould as auctioneer. We owe a very special thank you to all who so generously took part. It was inspiring for all RugbyWorks staff present to see such passion and support for RugbyWorks’ mission in the room.

To round off the evening, guests were treated to a Q&A as Lawrence was joined on stage by his celebrity teammates, leaving many in stitches before bringing the evening to a close.

We would like to extend considerable thanks to the staff at Archerfield Estate and Links for their outstanding hospitality throughout the event.
