Dallaglio Cycle Slammers reach Barcelona
After 10 days on the bike, our Dallaglio Cycle Slammers have reached Barcelona!
On Monday 30th May, our 18 core riders were flanked by Stage 1 riders for the journey from San Sebastian to Andorra. Alongside sun, rain, hail and storms, stage 1 featured some tough terrain and long distances to challenge the riders. On Day 3, the route took in 170km and close to 5,000m in height featuring the famous Col du Tourmalet, Col d’Aspin and Col du Perysourde resulting in a 12 hour day in the bike for many.
Dallaglio Foundation RugbyWorks Coach Will Smith took on Stage 1 and said: “It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done! But the group was fantastic and we all came together to complete the stage as a group.
It’s really important to have experienced the fundraising side of the work we do – seeing the whole process from income generation to personally delivering the programme has been incredibly motivational.”
On Sunday 5th June, our Stage 2 riders took the baton and began their long journey alongside our Core Riders from Andorra to Barcelona. The 550km was kick started by a long day in the saddle over 130km climbing straight out of Andorra. Before long the group had reached the Mediterranean with a much longed-for sea breeze to soften the stifling heat. The group have since ridden the beautiful North East Spanish coastline and rolled into Barcelona on Thursday 9th June for some well-earned celebrations before the tour continues in Majorca.
Stage 2 rider and Dallaglio Foundation CEO Rachel Roxburgh said “That was quite a week! I spent my birthday cycling 130km and over 2,800m which was certainly a first! Whilst it was tough, I was in the fantastic company of our supporters which made it a truly special, fun and unique experience.”
